Mystery Insect

This thing flew onto my windshield wiper yesterday in Madison, IN. After I got home and examined the photo, I realized that he has two sets of wings, one of which seems rather cumbersome and unlikely, and that his body seems to be all thorax and no abdomen.

What the heck is it?

  1. Beetle of some sort. The first set of "wings" is a covering found on the coleoptera (aka beetles) called elytra. The second set is the actual wings. I have way to much mental space dedicated to insects! :)

Love your photos and all your blogs!
