Hess Furniture Sign

Hess Furniture is long gone, but their free parking sign lives on.

Diamond Pub & Billiards

Remember when Jillian's on Barret abruptly and unexpectedly closed, but the announcement was quickly made that they'd be reopening soon under new management? As a huge Jillian's fan, I eagerly waited. And waited. And waited. And nothing ever happened.

Now finally somebody is doing something with the building! Diamond Pub & Billiards is having its grand opening tonight, New Year's Eve, and I plan on sticking my beak in to check it out. There's another Diamond location in St. Matthews, but I'm embarrassed to say I've never been there. Reportedly, there will be a FREE shuttle bus tonight going back and forth between the new location and the St. M one, every 30 minutes.

Roadside Death Marker

I'm of two minds regarding the Unsolvable Problem of roadside death markers; on the one hand, no one can deny grieving families the need to express themselves, but on the other hand, once these tributes are in place, they tend to persist. The result is that everywhere you go, there's constant depressing reminders of somebody's death at some time or other. There are some that I've been driving past for years now that show no signs of going away.

So what is the solution? Well, there isn't one. That's why it's called an Unsolvable Problem.

Gold Teef for Errbody!

I saw this truck two years ago and it just rolled up beside me again today in traffic. Looks like it's had a bit of a hard life since then.

Middletown Clock

No roman numerals, but otherwise the exact same clock as Anchorage.

Church of Refuge

Corner of Market and Hancock, Louisville.

Bootsy

A neighborhood kitty near the office in Butchertown, spends a lot of time lounging on cars. I call him "Bootsy". I don't know what his owner calls him. The cat knows his own real name but he ain't sayin'.

Swift Meat Plant

Robinson Pipe Cleaning Trucks

These trucks are all over downtown, making a cacophonous racket and messing around in Louisville's sewers.

Grave File

Someone left a rusty file on this grave, perhaps symbolically intending to aid the deceased man's escape.

Anchorage Clock

Looks suspiciously like the one in Lyndon.

End of One Way Street

'Cept it ain't.

Dunlop Tires

The Blurry Snout

For every photo of Krampus, there are twenty like this one. He knows what the camera is, and as soon as he sees it he gets up and runs up to put his face right in the lens. It's a wonder I ever get any clear shots of him.

You Go Girl

I'm starting to see a trend here.

Big Four Bridge Lights

The progress on converting this abandoned railroad bridge into a pedestrian bridge has been moving painfully slow for a decade now. But take heart - they've actually finished installing these fancy lights along its on-ramp, so maybe they really will complete the project during our lifetime.

Dead Pig

Over the River...

I don't get it.

Unless they mean, like, "We were gonna take this booze to grandma's, but hell with it, let's drink it."

Or is it a wry crack about the Sherman Minton Bridge making it so hard to get across the river?

Krampus Sleeping Under Papasan Chair

This papasan chair propped up against the wall makes a lovely fortress for the boy.

Lichen Log

Corner of Campbell and Washington

Always loved corner buildings whose architecture cooperates with the corner, and this example in Butchertown is a classic.
